Plenary Session: Impact and Change

The business school’s impact can thus be discussed in terms of three main aspects: Academic impact, Corporate impact and Social impact. Each of these may be evaluated on the business school’s measurable achievements in fostering entrepreneurship, producing program innovation, and supporting not only leading-edge academic research, but also research that has a powerful effect on globalized business practice. Therefore, how should we develop a mission-guided work agenda to increase business schools’ impact? What is the effect of the impact agenda on business schools? How it may through its activities bring real positive changes to the world? These are questions that business schools around the world are engaged with, and that impel all our opportunities for future progress.

Session A1 (Parallel): The Business School's Impacts on Social Development

Through corporate impact, social impact, or governmental impact, the business schools are contributing in changing the culture, policy, economics, business, and technology, and promoting the social development through its impact. Nowadays, business schools are more and more recognizing the importance of putting the mission-driven impact development into its agenda. Those schools seek impact beyond just innovation and knowledge creation; they seek to foster social responsibility, ethics and responsible leadership as well.

Session A2 (Parallel): The Corporate Impact of Academic Research

Even though there are few widely acknowledged quality standards for research practice, and few definitions of what constitutes good research, business schools broadly conclude that academic research makes substantial impact on the corporate world. Comparing with seeking more publishing in top journals, the business schools and professors are investing increasing efforts on working with practitioners, to develop the real business cases, to provide business consultancy, to transfer the management knowledge into commercial products. The relevance between business school’s academic research and its impact to corporate world, is interesting to study.

Session A3 (Parallel, Round Table): Evolution and Opportunities: Integration between Schools or between Companies in Emerging and Developed Economies
Business education originally evolved in the West, but has since then developed in various countries and regions along with the local economic and business development. But differences in local context, along with the natural tension of globalization vs. localization, is an ongoing and challenging topic. Many business schools or companies in the BRICs have developed  successful international strategies, but the integration between schools or between companies in emerging countries and in developed countries can definitely progress further, to meet both the local and the global challenges.

Session B1 (Parallel): Do Business School Rankings Mirror its Impacts?

The widely recognized international rankings include those conducted by the Academic Rankings of World Universities (ARWU) by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, The Times Higher Education World Reputation, QS World University, the Financial Times and US News . Business schools widely and increasing seek to be recognized as “world-class”. But is global competition pitting business schools against one another into a global academic arms race? Does rankings competition really promote business schools’ appropriate impact, and do the rankings themselves assess such impact? Can rankings participation distract business schools from their missions and appropriate impact? In this session, rankings professionals and other authorities will share their thoughts on this important topic.

Session B3 (Parallel): How can business school better nurture leaders?
What makes a successful leader? The possible answers have been subject to debate for centuries, but at least one thing is certain: while students can learn a lot about leadership in business schools, the learning shouldn’t end on graduation day. Educating tomorrow’s leaders requires providing them with the ability and the inspiration to capture lifelong learning opportunities – on and off the job. Are the leadership programs currently offered at many business schools successful? To what degree can leadership be taught at all? In this session, we will invite business school deans to share their viewpoints on the topic with the conference audience.
